After 38 years as the Woburn Lions, one of the areas oldest and largest football clubs is changing its name.
The day saw the official unveiling of the new club name ‘ Woburn & Wavendon F.C.’ Linking with our heritage, the boys teams will still be known as ‘The Lions‘ and the girls teams ‘The Lionesses‘. The official opening ceremony saw the Duke of Bedford together with veteran Wavendon footballer and resident, Peter George, unveil the new club name and logo :
Also after over 90 years of humps & bumps, the Wavendon Rec is finally flat!
Over the last 12 months the Club and its partner sponsors including Frosts Landscape Construction Limited, together with the help of the Wavendon Parish Council, have flattened & reseeded Wavendon Recreation Ground to make it suitable for our teams to play football on. Special thanks must go to our Vice Chairman – Robert Hill, for having the vision, the passion and determination to complete this project. This will now enable both children and young adults of the Woburn & Wavendon area to enjoy their chosen sport for years to come. It is a fantastic facility, and all at Woburn & Wavendon F.C. would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Robert for the legacy he has created.
To open the new facility a ‘ World Cup Themed’ tournament for U7/U8/U9’s was held :
With the World Cup just a month away, each club team adopted a country for the day. It created a unique event and atmosphere, with some terrific organised football played by the German teams, the samba beats and flair were evident in the Brazil teams, the English teams promised a lot a delivered a lot less ! The Dutch were seen arguing in a gazebo, the French full of Gallic flair but a little temperamental, the Japanese and Koreans hardworking and full of tenacity, and the Russians were caught playing on the wrong pitch !…..no stereotypes there then.
